Mon 18 → Fri 22 May 2026

Soča Valley

Five days in the Julian Alps. Two flavors, same area: easy river base, or alpine refuge crossing.

☀️

Weather looks kind

Drier than home that week. 14–22°C, sun on the bookends, no big rain day.

🚗

Easy logistics

~5h by car. No flights, no train puzzles. We pack the car and go.

🏞️

A different world

Slovenian stone villages, the brightest water in the Alps, hardly any Austrians.

Two ways to do it

Same base region, same drive, very different feel. One pins us in a stone village and we make easy day-trips. The other walks us up to a mountain refuge at 1,385m and back down through villages on the south side of the massif.

Base in Bovec

Four nights in the same village. Drive to a different valley each day.

Click pins for details. Day-trips radiate from Bovec.

Mon 18
Drive in. Vienna → Bovec in 5h. Evening walk along the Soča.
Tue 19
Gorge day. Velika Korita + Boka waterfall (144m drop), 4h loop.
Wed 20
High road. Mangart Saddle, Slovenia's highest road, ridge walk at 2,072m.
Thu 21
Flex day. Lepena, Krn flanks, or Kobarid + Hiša Franko gardens.
Fri 22
Home. Morning Soča source walk in Trenta. Drive back.

Low-friction. One hotel booking, no schedules. If weather turns ugly we just swap days around.

Krn mountain
Option B · alpine traverse

The Krn Lakes Refuge

Two nights up at a 1,385m mountain lodge, descending across the massif to a village inn.

Sleeping
Hotel + 2× hut + village
Effort
Real hiking
Max altitude
2,182 m

Dashed line = the hiking route. Car shuttles only on Day 2 (Bovec → Kobarid → shuttle to Lepena).

Mon 18
Drive in. Vienna → Bovec, hotel night to ease in.
Tue 19
Drop the car, walk up. Drive Bovec → Kobarid (40 min), park at the Kobarid hotel for the rest of the week. Pre-booked shuttle Kobarid → Lepena (~€35, 50 min). Hike up to the Krn Lakes Lodge (4h, +750m). First mountain night.
Wed 20
Plateau day. Lake Krn, traverse to Gomišček Shelter (2,182m) on the south ridge. Back to the lodge.
Thu 21
Down to Kobarid. South via Kuhinja pasture → Drežnica → short local bus or 15-min taxi to Kobarid. Hotel waiting, car waiting, dinner at Hiša Franko.
Fri 22
Home. Drive Kobarid → Vienna. No backtracking.

Needs the Krn Lakes Lodge to actually be open (Slovenian PD huts often open late May, sometimes early June). I'll phone them to confirm before we book.

Side by side

A · Bovec base B · Krn Lakes refuge
Effort Day walks, 3–5h Hut-to-hut day, 5–7h with packs
Max altitude 2,072 m (drive-up) 2,182 m (on foot)
Sleeping One hotel, four nights Bovec + Krn Lakes Lodge ×2 + Kobarid
Car logistics Stays in Bovec Move to Kobarid on Day 2, stays there until Friday
One shuttle leg No Yes — Kobarid → Lepena, Tue morning, ~€35
Weather flex Total — swap days at will Fixed once we're up there
Alpine feel Drives to viewpoints Sleeping at the treeline, mornings above the cloud
Risk Mangart road may not be cleared yet Hut may not be open + snow possible on the high traverse

My honest read

If you want a holiday: Option A. Same bed every night, four short walks, a long Saturday breakfast. Almost zero things can go wrong.

If you want a trip: Option B. Sleeping in a Slovenian mountain refuge at 1,385m is its own experience, and the Krn plateau day is the proper alpine memory of the week. The hut and the south traverse both need a call to verify they're a go, and we'd want to be a bit fitter for the descent day. Worth it for the right week.

We can also blend: do A but add one night up at the Krn Lakes Lodge mid-week if it opens in time. Lower stakes than full B.
